Christian Charity Chose Faith Over Federal Food
Bethesda Mission is a Christian charity in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania that provides valuable services, including meals, to approximately 100,000 people per month. The charity used to accept food from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) before a recent Executive Order issued by Barack Hussein Obama forced it to make a choice between faith or federal food that comes with perverse regulations; Bethesda Mission chose faith over federal food.
Obama’s Executive Order prohibits “religious services or religious activities during the distribution of food.” The USDA has revised its regulations regarding federal food to comply with Obama’s edict. Bethesda Mission used to receive a 1,000 pounds of federal food monthly, but decided to forfeit the food because, in the words of Scott Dunwoody, Bethesda’s vice president of business development, “We can no longer take the food on principal because prayer is an integral part of everything we do at Bethesda Mission.” Chuck Wingate, executive director of Bethesda Mission, told PennLive.com:
We don’t force our faith on anybody else. But we find the whole idea that the government’s going to come in and tell us what we can and cannot do in our facility to be out of bounds, especially in matters of faith.
Control is the crux of the problem. Executive Orders and the regulations that flow from them are the mechanisms Obama uses to circumvent the U.S. Constitution to deny Americans their natural rights and supplant God to crown government as the highest power. Democrats/Liberals/Progressives reject God and religion, so they use the force of the Leviathan to control and transform organizations like Bethesda Mission into secular entities.
The federal government is the equivalent of a drug dealer that gets state and local governments, charities, businesses, and individuals hooked on federal largesse to the point of addiction. Once addicted, they must accept the regulations attached to the money otherwise their dealer will stop feeding their addiction.
Democrats/Liberals/Progressives have done an outstanding job of using the redistribution of federal tax dollars under the guise of benevolence to federalize everything and everyone. Bethesda Mission’s willingness to forfeit federal food should be saluted because it shows moral clarity and a commitment to serving those in need, not the federal government. Bethesda Mission has a 102-year track record of success in caring for and transforming the lives of millions of people, so why would it jeopardize its mission for the tyrannical, immoral strings that come with federal handouts?
