Baltimore is a Microcosm of Modern Liberalism

The greatest obstacle to the welfare state is not greed but private charity that makes the welfare state irrelevant; the greatest obstacle to re-education of children in the name of the collective is allegiance to a higher power. More than that, the greatest obstacle to the state as god is an actual God above the state. – Ben Shapiro

The black family survived centuries of slavery and generations of Jim Crow, but it has disintegrated in the wake of the liberals’ expansion of the welfare state. – Thomas Sowell

The U.S. is becoming an increasingly fatherless society. A generation ago, an American child could reasonably expect to grow up with his or her father. Today an American child can reasonably expect not to. – David Blankenhorn

The welfare state is not really about the welfare of the masses. It is about the egos of the elites. – Thomas Sowell

The City of Baltimore has been front and center on every media outlet in the United States because Freddie Gray died while in the custody of the Baltimore Police Department. What followed Freddie Gray’s death is the usual mayhem. What coincides with the mayhem is the usual race hustlers popping up to take advantage of the situation. The death of Freddie Gray brought out the usual race hustlers, Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton, but a new voice, one vying to become the next President of the United States, entered the fray.

Hillary Clinton decided to take full advantage of the situation in Baltimore by declaring that she will help to end a “pattern” of cops killing black men. Hillary also called for criminal justice reforms for some bizarre, mystical reason. Hillary’s words are nothing more than hollow, liberal platitudes from an opportunist who thinks the black vote is a birthright for Democrats.

What Hillary and the rest of the Democrats don’t want to acknowledge about Baltimore and inner cities in America is that it is not rampaging cops that are destroying black people, it is modern liberalism realized in the policies of the federal government that have and continue to destroy black people. It is Lyndon Johnson’s (LBJ) Great Society and its continuation by Democrats committed to keeping people dependent on the federal government that has destroyed Baltimore.

Fifty years ago, LBJ delivered the commencement address at Howard University in which he declared, “We seek not just freedom but opportunity. We seek not just legal equity but human ability, not just equality as a right and a theory but equality as a fact and equality as a result…” The pursuit of equality of outcome LBJ spoke of led to the largest transfer of wealth in all of history, a transfer that continues today.

The inconvenient truth for Democrats is that the welfare system has failed every person dependent upon the system. The welfare system has not created a great society. The policies of the Great Society have assisted in destroying the American family, especially in the black community.

Hillary followed up her statement about cops killing black men with this inane statement:

“There is something wrong when a third of all black men face the prospect of prison during their lifetimes. And an estimated 1.5 million black men are missing from their families and communities because of incarceration and premature death… My heart breaks for these young men and their families. We have to come to terms with some hard truths about race and justice in America.”

Hillary is right about some hard truths, but those truths have nothing to do with race or the criminal justice system, they have to do with her political party’s welfare system that turns a blind eye to the deleterious affects of government dependency.

When LBJ launched the Democrats’ Great Society, the illegitimacy rate for blacks was 24 percent, and the illegitimacy rate for whites was 3 percent. After fifty years of the Great Society, the illegitimacy rate for blacks is 73 percent, and the illegitimacy rate for whites is 29 percent. What is the significance of the illegitimacy rate? Crime becomes a major problem in communities where the majority of homes are missing a parent. What follows crime? Incarceration.

The National Center for Fathering (NCF) is an organization that clearly understands that arguably the worst social ill plaguing America is the fatherless family. The NCF succinctly explains the correlation between crime and fatherless families, “Adolescents living in intact families are less likely to engage in delinquency than their peers living in non-intact families. This relationship is operating through differences in family processes—parental involvement, supervision, monitoring, and parent-child closeness—between intact and non-intact families.” Crime is a major problem in cities like Baltimore where the greater majority of homes are fatherless.

The City of Baltimore is a casualty of the Great Society. The Great Society’s quest for equality of outcome and the extinction of poverty launched the moral, social, and cultural revolution of the 1960s. What has modern liberalism’s Great Society provided black people in Baltimore? Pat Buchanan recently wrote, “Their (black people) work ethic has been eviscerated by an endless flow of social welfare benefits. Those benefits have often removed the incentive to find or hold a job, and the necessity to have a breadwinner, a father in the home.” The black people in Baltimore don’t need empty platitudes from politicians. They can do without the race pimps. What they need is a spiritual and moral renewal, not more government.

The culture war launched in the 1960s has claimed many lives, white and black, who were sacrificed at the altar of modern liberalism. Black people were placed in government housing to live out there lives as wards of the federal government waiting for their next welfare checks. Buchanan summed up the plight of black people brought on by the cultural revolution when he wrote:

The social and cultural revolution of the 1960s undermined the black churches and depopulated them of their young. The expulsion of the Bible and of all religious and moral instructions from public schools left black children defenseless against the lure of lifestyles of gang leaders and rap singers. The conscience- and character-forming institutions that inculcated the beliefs and values that sustained black families through the Depression, the war and the 1950s have collapsed. Result: Many black neighborhoods are unsafe for those who live there.

The black people in Baltimore are the casualties of national politicians and fed gov bureaucrats who are incapable of delivering anything but misery to them.

The largest expenditure in the federal budget is welfare. There are 83 federal welfare programs that account for 21 percent of the federal government’s annual budget. The programs cost taxpayers $746 billion, and when you include the $283 billion the states provide, the total outlay for welfare programs is $1.03 trillion each year. What are the results of the $24 trillion spent on welfare programs? What have the protesters in Baltimore reaped from the 83 welfare programs? Abject poverty, fatherless homes, inferior education, crime-riddled neighborhoods, and diseased souls.

A frustrated conservative who is very concerned that America has entered its twilight years. Dan has a B.A. in political philosophy and an MBA with a concentration in finance. He has an honorable discharge from the United States Navy after serving for several years after graduating from high school. Please share this with liberals and RINOs because there is nothing better than upsetting them. The U.S. is no longer a constitutional republic, but rather an oligarchy. We live in a post constitutional America where competing tribes sell their votes for the promise of freebies. America is on the cusp of being lost to Marxists and their army of bureaucrats unless the American people move outside of their comfort zone and get involved the same way Marxists have gotten involved by infiltrating the political, educational, and bureaucratic systems.
